1. Introduction
Wanted People UK ("WPUK") works in close cooperation with UK police forces and law enforcement agencies to support the identification and location of wanted individuals. This policy sets out the principles and procedures that govern WPUK's relationship with law enforcement and the handling of information shared between the two.
2. Role of WPUK
WPUK is a public-facing platform that republishes identification appeals issued by UK police forces. WPUK does not:
- Conduct its own criminal investigations
- Make arrests or detain individuals
- Access police databases or intelligence systems
- Act as an agent of any police force or government body
3. Cooperation with Law Enforcement
WPUK cooperates with law enforcement in the following ways:
- Publishing identification appeals as authorised by UK police forces
- Forwarding lead information submitted by the public to the relevant police force
- Removing or updating content at the request of law enforcement
- Complying with court orders and legal restrictions
- Providing data or records when required by law or in response to lawful requests
4. Handling of Identification Leads
When a member of the public submits a lead through the WPUK platform:
The lead is securely recorded on the WPUK system
The lead is forwarded to the relevant police force for assessment
The identity of the lead submitter is protected and not shared publicly
WPUK does not follow up or investigate the lead itself
5. Protection of Investigations
WPUK will not publish any information that could compromise an ongoing police investigation. If a police force requests that a case not be published, or that specific details be withheld, WPUK will comply. WPUK will also remove content immediately if instructed by law enforcement that continued publication may prejudice proceedings.
6. Respect for Legal Restrictions
WPUK respects all legal restrictions on publication, including court-imposed reporting restrictions, anonymity orders, and contempt of court provisions. WPUK will not publish content that is subject to any such restriction and will take immediate action to remove content if a restriction is brought to its attention.
7. Evidence Preservation
WPUK maintains secure records of all lead submissions and platform activity. This data may be preserved and provided to law enforcement in response to lawful requests, court orders, or where WPUK believes it is necessary to prevent or detect crime.
8. Privacy & Data Protection
All data shared between WPUK and law enforcement is handled in accordance with the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. WPUK processes personal data for the purposes of crime prevention and detection, which is a legitimate interest under data protection law. The identity of lead submitters is protected at all times.
9. Responsible Public Engagement
WPUK actively encourages responsible public engagement and discourages any form of vigilantism. All published content includes clear warnings that individuals should not be approached and that information should be reported through official channels only.
Never attempt to approach or apprehend any individual featured on the platform. Report information through WPUK or contact the police directly.
10. Commitment to Public Safety
WPUK is committed to supporting public safety through responsible cooperation with law enforcement. We will continue to develop our processes and strengthen our partnerships with police forces across the United Kingdom.
